Personalized Medicine in the Paediatric Population: The Balance Between Pharmacogenetic Progress and Bioethics

Abstract: Personalized medicine (PM) is becoming increasingly important in contemporary clinical and research scenarios. In the context of PM, pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics are aimed at the genetic personalization of drug response. Extrinsic and intrinsic factors may explain interindividual variability in drug response. Among such factors, age seems to specifically intervene to modulate drug response since normal developmental changes may influence the exposure-response relation. Consequently, the potential bene… Show more

“…Admitting a patient entails devising a healthcare plan and arranging, on the basis of clinical criteria and the patient's specific needs [20][21][22], for the appropriate appointments. The Prison Medical Director is responsible for planning personalized treatment programs and scheduling all necessary healthcare services, in accordance with internal processes, within the appropriate timeframe-both for basic and specialist health services.…”

“…Much has been written regarding genetic testing in children in general 102111. However, fewer papers have been published specifically about the appropriateness of PGx testing in children 76,112114. Guidelines from professional organizations focus on the benefits of testing to the child103,115 and support the use of PGx testing, particularly when the clinical utility has been demonstrated in pediatric studies 102.…”

“…Pharmacogenetics is the study of the role of genetic variability in determining inter‐individual variability in responses to pharmacological therapy (Schiavone et al ., 2017), which could potentially be used for treatment optimization in individual patients, resulting in a more targeted, more efficacious, and less harmful treatment (Loscher et al ., 2009). In general, pharmacogenetics usually refers to how variation in one single gene influences the response to a single drug.…”
