Personality types as measured by the California Psychological Inventory.

Abstract: An attempt was made to delineate personality types by applying a Q-type factor analytic strategy to the California Psychological Inventory protocols of several samples of subjects. Three modal profiles, characteristic of the scores of major subgroups of individuals, were isolated and subsequently cross-validated. These three major types-tentatively labeled as antisocial, neurotic, and well adjusted-classified 57% of the subjects in the study. Differences in the distribution of these types as a function of race… Show more

“…Burger & Cross (1979) and Skinner et al (1976) found that this procedure produces profiles which account for a greater number of the subjects than randomly generated profiles. The six groupings formed by considering both correlation sign and magnitude can be assigned different descriptors by considering the relative peaks and interpreting them as one would an individual subject profile.…”

“…Since several aspects of the individual are included in the groupings, the accuracy of prediction should be improved over that possible using single group membership. A refinement of this approach would be to consider the modal profiles in each domain as dimensions (Burger & Cross, 1979;Skinner et al, 1976). The subject-modal profile correlations can then be treated as scores on each dimension and submitted to discriminant analysis to generate predictive functions.…”
