Personality, negative social exchanges, and physical health among bereaved adults

Abstract: While much research has investigated the association between personality and health, little research has done so using a bereaved sample. Additionally, little research has investigated how personality influences the frequency of negative social exchanges bereaved individuals receive. This study utilized a structural equation model to investigate the associations among age, gender, personality, negative social exchanges, length of bereavement, and self-reported physical health in a sample of bereaved adults. “…Personality traits are associated with social behavior, including interactions individuals have with their social network (Asendorpf & Wilpers, 1998;Silva, Henrie, & Patrick;Walen & Lachman, 2000). In the current study, neuroticism was associated with less PSS, while conscientiousness, extraversion and agreeableness were associated with greater PSS.…”

“…Negative social exchanges refer to the unwelcome and unsympathetic exchanges among members of a social network [47]. The examples of the negative social exchanges are neglect, rejection, insensitivity, interference and unwanted advice (Brooks and Dunkel Schetter, 2011; Newsom et al, 2005; Rook, 1998 in Silva et al, 2016 [47]).…”
