Personality, Brain Asymmetry, and Neuroendocrine Reactivity in Two Immune-Mediated Disorders: A Preliminary Report

Abstract: Development of some immune-mediated disorders may depend on dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. To explore neuropsychologic mechanisms in relation to the abnormal endocrine reactivity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and chronic hepatitis C (CHC) we used the corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) test, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), and the Edinburgh Inventory of Manual Preference Inventory (EIMP). Compared to controls, the adrenocorticotro… Show more

“…There are clinical observations that indicate that adrenal tumors causing primary aldosteronism are 2 or 3 times more likely to occur on the left than on the right side [36]. Furthermore, several data indicate associations between cerebral dominance, the reactivity of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis and the pathogenesis of certain immune-mediated diseases [37].…”

“…However, the autopsy data, which indicate that in suicide victims the left, but not the right gland is significantly heavier than in sudden death, nonpsychiatric controls (Szigethy et al, 1994) might suggest that the asymmetry in the supraspinal innervation could play a significant role in the control of the organ. Furthermore, increasing number of data indicate associations between cerebral asymmetry, hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal reactivity, and pathogenesis of certain immune-mediated diseases (Martins et al, 2002).…”

“…Some studies have considered some psychological variables in SLE patients, namely: personality dimensions [4] , life events [5] , lower self-esteem, and social support [6] . From our literature review, references to alexithymia in SLE patients were scarce.…”
