Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, 58,[185][186][187][188][189][190][191] The purpose of this study is to investigate whether professional commitment can be seen as a moderator in the relationship between job demands and emotional exhaustion among Norwegian nurses. Inspired by the job demands-resources model, this study explores whether having a strong commitment to the nursing profession can be seen as a resource that buffers the effect of job demands on emotional exhaustion or, conversely, intensifies the impact of job demands. A survey that comprised Norwegian nurses who had graduated three years previously (N = 388) was conducted. Multiple regression was performed to test the hypothesis. The results provide support to a buffering effect; thus, individuals with a higher degree of professional commitment conveyed a weaker association between job demands and emotional exhaustion compared with nurses with a lower degree of commitment. Developing a better understanding of the potential buffering effect of professional commitment is of great interest. The present study is the first to utilize professional commitment as a resource within the job demands-resources framework.

Aims Our study investigates the influence of career facilitators and barriers on nurses’ improvement of their professional capabilities and their professional turnover intention. Background Reducing nurses’ professional turnover intention could help alleviate the global nursing shortage. Nevertheless, little research has addressed how career facilitators and barriers, nurses’ improvement of their professional capabilities and professional turnover intention are related, indicating a gap. Design This study used a cross‐sectional design. Methods We surveyed 502 out of 2,660 full‐time nurses who worked for a medical centre in Taiwan between January–March 2018. Our items were adapted from Cunningham et al. and Teng et al. and had adequate reliability and validity. Structural equation modelling was used to test the study hypotheses. Results Human capital, social capital, and discrimination were positively related to intention to improve professional capabilities. Moreover, intention to improve professional capabilities was positively related to action to improve professional capabilities, which was negatively related to professional turnover intention. Conclusion Most of the career facilitators and even barriers, boost the improvement of professional capabilities and are useful for retaining nurses in the nursing profession. Impact Findings of this study should have an impact on nursing managers by offering them means to retain nurses, for example, enhancing human capital and social capital among nurses to reduce their turnover intention.

I denne artikkelen undersøker vi når forskjeller i deltidsønsker etableres blant politi-og sykepleierstudenter, og om det er de minst dedikerte som ønsker deltidsarbeid. Studien er basert på en longitudinell spørreundersøkelse hvor politi-og sykepleierstudenter er fulgt fra de starter på studiet og frem til uteksaminering (N=661). Resultatene viser at kvinnelige sykepleierstudenter er mer orienterte mot deltidsarbeid enn kvinnelige politistudenter. Forskjellen i deltidspreferanser er tydelig allerede når de starter på utdanningen, og dette holder seg gjennom studiet. Vi finner også at de som er mest dedikerte til yrket oftere ønsker å jobbe heltid, men forskjellen i yrkesdedikasjon forklarer i liten grad forskjellen i deltidsønsker mellom sykepleierstudenter og politistudenter. Studien indikerer at deltidsorientering og dedikasjon til yrket formes tidlig. Politi-og sykepleierstudenter er ulike allerede ved studiestart. Tidlige preferanser for deltid kan vaere med på å forklare hvorfor deltidsarbeid er mer utbredt i sykepleieryrket.Nøkkelord Deltid, dedikasjon til yrket, politi, sykepleier, student
