Ultimately, what participants in this research noted was the perspective which is noted in some literature on power: that through encounter, individuals become empowered to contribute and change society too (Natiello 2001;Proctor 2002;Schmid 2015b).…”

“…Furthermore, Lago went on to cite the root meaning of the word 'encounter' from the word 'encountre' developed from the old French word 'encontrer', which means 'to meet. ' Schmid (2015b) drew on aspects of encounter which related to standing counter to one's expectations out of an attitude of curiosity, and empathy, whilst being open to being surprised by the other. “…Maureen O’Hara’s vision of humanistic psychology promoting “narratives of hope and solidarity” can be an antidote to the “current narratives of despair, fear, and division” in a number of specific concrete ways, as described above. But I also think that in order to effectively accomplish this, there needs to be a merging of humanistic psychology with progressive politics (Benjamin, 2020a, 2020b; House et al, 2018; Proctor et al, 2006; Schmid, 2015). Progressive politics is intertwined with values inclusive of social reform, nonviolent dissent, freedom of speech, combating climate change, limiting the power of monopolistic corporations, environmental justice, economic and political equality, and improvement of the human condition (Greenberg & Levin, 2019; The Progressive Magazine, 2020; Sargent, 2018; Wikipedia, 2020).…”
