Persistent organic pollutants exposure during pregnancy, maternal gestational weight gain, and birth outcomes in the mother–child cohort in Crete, Greece (RHEA study)

Abstract: The findings suggest that prenatal exposure to PCBs and HCB impairs fetal growth and adds to the growing literature that demonstrates an association between low-level environmental pollutant exposure and fetal growth. Furthermore our results suggest that the association of POPs, maternal gestational weight gain and birth weight is probably more complex than that previously hypothesized.

“…In the present study, serum concentrations of organochlorine pesticides were comparable to those reported previously in some populations in Tunisia (Ben Hassine et al, 2014;Ennaceur and Driss, 2010) and other Mediterranean countries, such as Egypt (Ahmed et al, 2002), Italy (Bergonzi et al, 2009), Spain (Llop et al, 2010), or Greece (Vafeiadi et al, 2014). However, PCB concentrations were in general higher than those reported in other Tunisian populations and were comparable to those reported in more industrialized Mediterranean countries such as Italy (Bergonzi et al, 2009) and Spain (Llop et al, 2010), which may be attributable to the recent rapid technological development of Tunisia.…”

“…While some research has found that gestational weight gain (GWG) may confound the association between maternal exposure to persistent organic pollutants and birth weight (23), other investigators have noted that their findings differed according to GWG stratum (24, 25). In light of this literature, we conducted 2 additional analyses with the results 1) adjusted for GWG as a continuous variable and 2) stratified by GWG category, defined according to the US Institute of Medicine (26).…”

“…There was some evidence for attenuation of the effect size with increasing tertiles of tree cover. Vafeidi et al [33] measured serum levels of multiple POPs, including pesticides, polychlorinated diphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)-47, among pregnant women during the first Fig. 2 The dynamic pregnancy and early-life external exposome [12].…”
