Persistent Linear Bands in Infancy Acquired After Local Pressure: A Consequence of Mast Cell Activation?

Abstract: A 10-month-old girl with marked symptomatic dermographism presented with linear bands at the sock line noted to have developed following an episode of localized urticaria and angioedema at the sock line. We speculate that release of mast cell mediators associated with the dermographism may have triggered the development of the linear bands.

“…Raised linear bands of infancy have been reported in five previous cases (1–4). Two of the five cases were associated with premature infants with a history of either amniotic bands (1) or placental tears (3) and an association between the linear bands and amniotic band syndrome has been postulated.…”

“…Differentiating ARBI from sock‐line bands can be difficult, but in the former, the eruption may also involve other sites, including the trunk and upper limbs, and is persistent and progressive. Additionally, associated findings, for example, amniotic bands in utero, limb constrictions, and defects along with pregnancy complications such as placental abruption, pre‐eclampsia, and prematurity, have been reported with ARBI …”
