Persistent foreign body sensation and pharyngeal pain due to retention of staples: an interesting sequelae of endoscopic stapling procedure

Abstract: The surgical treatment of a pharyngeal pouch with endoscopic stapling diverticulotomy is a relatively new concept. Long-term results and complications are yet to be fully studied. We describe a patient who developed persistent pharyngeal pain and foreign body sensation due to retention of a clump of staples at the cricopharyngeal sphincter. This complication has not been reported before. This case highlights the need for repeat endoscopy rather than a barium swallow X-ray if the patients are symptomatic after … Show more

“…Four case reports detailing complications during endoscopic stapling were excluded from the meta-analysis as it was not possible to determine the overall rate of complications from the respective departments [20][21][22][23]. A correspondence letter proposing suitable criteria for day case pharyngeal pouch stapling was also excluded for lack of patient data [24], as was another which described a novel endoscopic surgical technique [25].…”

“…Minor complications include sore throat, gingival or mucosal laceration, and dental damage. Temporary vocal cord paralysis74 and a persistent foreign body sensation from retained staples have been documented86. No deaths were reported in the series reviewed in Table 2 and the low morbidity rate makes the technique ideal for the poor‐risk patient.…”

“…Other minor morbidities reported in the literature include gingival or mucosal laceration, dental damage, neck and throat pain and haematoma. Temporary vocal cord paralysis has been reported 29 and persistent foreign body sensation from retained staples has also been documented 30 . One patient in the present series described a foreign body sensation transiently after surgery but the cause of this was uncertain.…”
