Peroxidase is involved in Pepper yellow mosaic virus resistance in Capsicum baccatum var. pendulum

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Pathogenesis-related proteins (PRs) are among the defense mechanisms of plants that work as an important barrier to the development of pathogens. These proteins are classified into 17 families according to their amino acid sequences, serology, and/or biological or enzyme activity. The present study aimed to identify PRs associated with the pathosystem of Capsicum baccatum var. pendulum: Pepper yellow mosaic virus (PepYMV). Forty-five-day-old plants from accession UENF 1624, previously identified as r… Show more

“…Therefore, SDS-PAGE analysis showed similar protein patterns in PepYMV-infected and control plants. Similar results were reported by Gonçalves et al (2013), who evaluated the SDS-PAGE gel profile for chitinases and lipid transfer proteins in both control and PepYMVinoculated C. baccatum seedlings. These data showed similar protein profiles for the different inoculation times.…”

“…Among the few studies related to biochemical defense mechanisms against PepYMV in peppers, Gonçalves et al (2013) reported an increase in peroxidase expression in C. baccatum when it is inoculated with the virus, indicating that pathogenesis-related (PR)-9 is involved in the defense mechanism for such plants. Proteinase inhibitors related to C. baccatum defense against PepYMV have not been studied.…”

“…Genetic resource studies in pre-breeding and breeding have been conducted for C. baccatum, which were primarily aimed at morpho-agronomic characterization and disease resistance (Rêgo et al, 2009;Rodrigues et al, 2012;Bento et al, 2013;Gonçalves et al, 2013). Additionally, interspecific crossing for gene introgression of bacterial spot disease resistance from C. baccatum into C. annuum have been successfully obtained by Potnis et al (2012).…”

“…PODs play an important role in abiotic stress tolerance in various plant species, including rice (Oryza sativa) (Demiral and Turkan 2005), barley (Hordeum uhulgare) (Liang et al, 2003), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) (Mittova et al, 2004), pepper (Capsicum baccatum) (Gonçalves et al, 2013), and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) (Li et al, 2014). Some plant POD genes have been expressed using transgenic techniques.…”
