Perivascular space fluid contributes to diffusion tensor imaging changes in white matter

Abstract: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has been extensively used to map changes in brain tissue related to neurological disorders. Among the most widespread DTI findings are increased mean diffusivity and decreased fractional anisotropy of white matter tissue in neurodegenerative diseases. “…We are aware of only one study where the effects of PVS on quantitative MRI were investigated. Sepehrband et al showed that diffusion tensor imaging measures, such as fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity, are biased by PVS 20 . These authors demonstrate that this effect is due to the high diffusivity of the fluid within the PVS, and to the restricted diffusion of PVS fluid in the direction perpendicular to the vessel axis.…”
