“…Although a few stage I ovarian cancers apparently shed cytologically abnormal cells into the pelvic peritoneal fluid (5,11,14,18,19), the pain of culdocentesis repels patients, the sharp point of the needle may easily lacerate the capsule of an intact adnexal cyst, immediately spreading its contents (35), and results of cul-de-sac cytology are usually inconclusive (9,14). Therefore, we do not favor culdocentesis to obtain peritoneal cytologic specimens.…”

“…Benign cystic teratomas are associated with distinctive benign atypical cells of nonmesothelial origin. 5 Elongated cells with lengthened nuclei may be seen with mucinous cystadenoma, and a type of large cell noted with serous cystadenoma has been described in detail. 5 These are additional examples of benign atypical cells of nonmesothelial origin.…”

The presence of tall columnar cells, with or without cilia, in peritoneal fluid is compatible with a serous cystadenoma.…”

“…the finding of malignant cells may be the only positive evidence and may be crucial in the decision to use chenio-or radiotherapy. Free fluid from the pouch of Douglas is also used; it may be obtained at laparotomy or laparoscopy, or else by cul-de-sac puncture (McGowan et a/. 1972;Villa Santa & Jovanovski 1980;Jones et al 1981).…”
