Abstract: Subclinical peripheral nerve involvement may be seen in SCD patients. Electrophysiological examinations are recommended in routine examination to diagnose early neuropathy in SCD patients without neurologic symptoms.

“…Restless legs syndrome is also a major symptom in conditions with peripheral neuropathy such as diabetes (45). Peripheral nerve involvement, diagnosed by conventional electrophysiological studies, was much more common among adult sickle cell disease individuals when compared with those without sickle cell disease (19.6 vs. 0.0%) (11). Peripheral nerve involvement may be implicated in the pathophysiology of RLS, and its diagnosis might aid in proper management of RLS in patients with sickle cell disease (46).…”

“…Because patients with sickle cell disease have low Hb concentration and some may have subclinical peripheral nerve involvement (11), they are likely to have a higher prevalence of RLS than those not having sickle cell disease. In addition, sickle cell disease is often associated with chronic and episodic painful events that can potentially increase the risk of other sleep disorders such as insomnia.…”

“…Adults with SCD experience complications rarely seen in childhood, including leg ulcers, end‐stage kidney disease, restrictive lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and retinopathy . Episodic acute pain may evolve into chronic pain due to peripheral nerve injury, central sensitization, and psychosocial factors . Men with SCD experience priapism, testicular infarction, and gonadal dysfunction; women have high peripartum morbidity and mortality risks .…”
