Peripheral nerve regeneration through allografts compared with autografts in FK506-treated monkeys

Abstract: Nerve regeneration through cold-preserved allografts in a primate model temporarily treated with FK506 was similar to that obtained using nerve autografts, in terms of neuronal and axonal counts. Nevertheless, temporary immunosuppression produced lower NCV when allografts were used, with less maturation of the myelinated fibers, which indicated that a partial rejection had taken place.

“…Several techniques of peripheral nerve repair exist, including microsuturing, gluing [19, 20] and grafting [21]. Cyanoacrylate synthetic glue has therefore been proposed because its application for nerve repair is relatively easy, it maintains the anastomosis even while under tension, and it avoids all risk of viral transmission [22, 23].…”

“…Some cases may necessitate surgical intervention 32,38,43 . There are several techniques for repairing peripheral nerves including: micro-suturing, gluing 6,18,29,32,41 (fibrin and cyanoacrylate glues), tabulation 33,36,40 , grafting 1,34 (allograft, autograft), and laser welding 15 . The ideal technique has yet to be developed, but several principles for nerve repair are accepted 5,29 .…”
