Peripheral endothelial function and arterial stiffness in women with migraine with aura: a case-control study

Abstract: Peripheral endothelial function is not impaired in women with MA, but they have greater arterial stiffness. This may contribute to the increased stroke risk in women with MA.

“…Seven studies measured IMT in migraine patients with conflicting results (9,(23)(24)(25)(26)(27). Comparison between these studies is hampered by different case selection methods, such as clinic based (23,(25)(26)(27)(28) versus population based (9,24), and exclusion of participants with known cardiovascular risk factors (23,(25)(26)(27)(28) versus correction for these risk factors (9,24). The two largest population-based studies (9,24), with more than 100 migraine patients (unselected with regard to cardiovascular risk factors), found slightly decreased values of IMT, which is in line with our findings.…”

“…Several among the available studies did not reveal any alteration in the endothelial function of migraineurs. Six of them did not find any difference in FMD between migraineurs and control subjects (Table  2) [20-23,25,26] and a further study confirmed the lack of any alteration in endothelial function assessed by PAT ratio (Table  3) [32]. Three studies assessing peripheral vasodilation after pharmacological stimuli found comparable responses in subjects with and without migraine (Table  3) [20,33,35].…”

“…Most of them assessed endothelial function by measuring FMD (Table  2) [20-30], some used PAT (Table  3) [31,32], some measured peripheral vasodilation in response to pharmacological stimuli (Table  3) [20,30,33-35], and others assessed endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) (Table  4) [23,36,37]. Findings were not consistent across the studies.…”

“…Liman et al indicated that there was no significant difference in CAIMT and peripheral arterial tonometry (PAT) ratio in female patients with migraine with aura. [18] They concluded that in women with migraine with aura, peripheral endothelial function is not disturbed, but they have increased arterial stiffness that may explain increased stroke incidence in this population. Schwaiger et al investigated both burden of atherosclerosis via carotid and femoral artery IMT measurement, and venous thromboembolism incidence in migraine patients compared to non-migrainous participants.…”
