Perioperative management of elderly patients with osteoarthritis requiring total knee arthroplasty

Abstract: Knee osteoarthritis is a common arthritic disease which mainly affects the elderly (≥65 years old) population. As a result of the cartilage degeneration, it can cause a significant amount of pain and functional limitation. In patients who are refractory to conservative management, total knee arthroplasty is being utilised as the last resort in management. In this review, we discuss the perioperative management of elderly patients with osteoarthritis requiring total knee arthroplasty.

“…Preoperative exercise-based training (prehabilitation) has been suggested as an essential component, attributing to a fast recovery after TJR (Franz et al, 2018 ; Ghosh and Chatterji, 2018 ; Lim and Thahir, 2021 ). However, often with limited pre-operative time from accepting surgery to the day-of-surgery (i.e., 4–12 weeks), it is reasonable to address impairments expected to have significant impact on the post-operative outcome, such as lower limb muscle mass and strength.…”
