Aim The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of periodontitis in dentate people between 2011 and 2020. Materials and Methods PUBMED, Web of Science, and LILACS were searched up to and including December 2021. Epidemiological studies reporting the prevalence of periodontitis conducted between 2011 and 2020 were eligible for inclusion in this review. Studies were grouped according to the case definition of confidence as confident (Centers for Disease Control [CDC] AAP 2012; CDC/AAP 2007; and Armitage 1999) and non‐confident (community periodontal index of 3 or 4, periodontal pocket depth >4 mm, and clinical attachment level ≥1 mm). Random effects meta‐analyses with double arcsine transformation were conducted. Sensitivity subgroup and meta‐regression analyses explored the effect of confounding variables on the overall estimates. Results A total 55 studies were included. The results showed a significant difference, with confident case definitions (61.6%) reporting nearly twice the prevalence as non‐confident classifications (38.5%). Estimates using confident periodontal case definitions showed a pooled prevalence of periodontitis of 61.6%, comprising 17 different countries. Estimates reporting using the CDC/AAP 2012 case definition presented the highest estimate (68.1%) and the CDC/AAP 2007 presented the lowest (48.8%). Age was a relevant confounding variable, as older participants (≥65 years) had the highest pooled estimate (79.3%). Conclusion Between 2011 and 2020, periodontitis in dentate adults was estimated to be around 62% and severe periodontitis 23.6%. These results show an unusually high prevalence of periodontitis compared to the previous estimates from 1990 to 2010.

Background: Oral health is a basic human right that, due to the high incidence and prevalence of oral diseases, represents a priority health problem. Oral diseases such as dental caries, periodontal disease and malocclusion are in high demand in dental services around the world. Aim: to describe the oral health behavior of an adult population attended in the last semester of 2022 at the Ciudad Libertad dental clinic, Havana province, Cuba. Material and Method: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out on oral health behavior in an adult population who came requesting dental care during the last semester of 2022 at the Ciudad Libertad dental clinic, Havana province, Cuba. A random sample of 100 adult patients over 20 years of age was taken. The variables used were: age, which was represented by age groups; sex, male and female; reason for consultation, review, prophylaxis, filling, pain, extraction and prosthesis; risk factors, poor oral hygiene, cariogenic diet, onychophagia, tongue dysfunction, consumption of hot food, mouth breathing and smoking; clinical diagnosis, dental caries, periodontal disease, masticatory dysfunction, pulp and periapical diseases, malocclusion. Conclusion: The female sex was the most represented, as well as the group from 20 to 34 years of age. The dental filling prevailed as the first reason for consultation. As risk factors, poor oral hygiene and cariogenic diet were the most present. Periodontal disease was the most diagnosed, affecting more than half of the population.

Clinical designs in dentistry collect measurements of the teeth of each subject, forming complex data structures; however, standard statistical methods (Student’s t-test, ANOVA, and regression models) do not treat the data as a grouped data type; that is, the measurements are treated as independent despite not being the case. A disadvantage of not considering the dependence on multilevel data is that if there is a significant correlation between the observations, it is ignored by the researcher and consequently finds statistically significant results when in fact they are not. Bayesian methods have the advantage of not assuming normality, unlike maximum likelihood estimation, and Bayesian methods are appropriate when you have small samples. We showed the minimum statistical theory for the use of multilevel models in dental research when the response variable is numerical. In this regard, it was proposed to carry out a Bayesian multilevel analysis to determine the clinical factors associated with the depth of periodontal probing. We adapted the bottom-up strategy to specify a multilevel model in the frequentist approach to the Bayesian approach. We checked the adequacy of the fit of the postulated model using posterior predictive density.
