Perinatal complications in women with gestational diabetes mellitus

Abstract: This study of women with gestational diabetes mellitus and non-diabetic pregnant women showed that gestational diabetes mellitus was associated with a significantly lower gestational age at delivery and an increased rate of admission to the neonatal ward. Women diagnosed with GDM before 20 weeks of gestation had an increased need for insulin treatment during pregnancy and a high risk of subsequent overt DM, compared with women diagnosed with GDM later in pregnancy.

“…Furthermore, SDNN, a marker predictive for cardiac mortality is significantly reduced up to 48 weeks postpartum in preeclampsia, which underpins the aforementioned potential long-term consequences [ 15 ]. Findings from this study are in line with previous findings from perinatal research [ 14 , 16 ]. Increased sleep deprivation in the first 16 weeks following childbirth may be considered as a possible confounding stress variable; however, this applies to all groups, which is why this factor is negligible.…”

“…Early initiation and frequent prenatal medical nutrition visits have been consistently shown to improve both maternal and infant outcomes [54], [55]. Dietitians can assist women with gestational diabetes by developing individualized meal plans, as well as implementing and evaluating the care plan through a series of visits.…”

“…It has been reported that there is association between GDM and gestational hypertension [35]. The rates of both gestational hypertension is increased in women with GDM [36,37] and the rate of preeclampsia, a category of gestational hypertension, is affected by the severity of GDM [38]. Hypertension in GDM was associated with physiologic abnormal characteristics, including insulin resistance and over expression of innate immune response, which is related with inflammation and oxidative stress, and vascular abnormality [35].…”
