Peri-Urbanisation: Between Residential Preferences and Job Opportunities

Abstract: The debate on the nature and state of peri-urban development in Europe is dynamic. While residents and their residential preferences have long been identified as strong drivers of the process of peri-urbanisation, other influences have also been discussed, such as the supply side of the housing market or job opportunities for residents. This paper analyses the population and job growth trends in the last five decades of 230 urban areas in mainland France. The results show that the pattern of peri-urban develop… Show more

“…(Tzaninis and Boterman, 2018) in its resumé point on suburbanization as a prevalent process of post-war, capitalist urban growth, conditioning to a majority of citizens in many advanced capitalist economies to live in the suburbs. (Hilal et al, 2018) explain above mentioned processes as a result of the gradual saturation of the central areas, improvements in infrastructure level, and steady growth in urban real estate prices, as well as by push factors (city intrusions) and pull factors (peripheral amenities). Also, the high cost of housing in city cores led to the outflow of the less affluent households and families with children from central districts to settle the outskirts.…”

“…Urbanization and commonly related processes of a city changes became an object of the interest from various fields of expertise and science (Tzaninis & Boterman, 2018;Hilal et al, 2018;Taubenböck, et al, 2019;Tsenkova & Nedovic-Budic, 2006). Also, many authors had investigated the impact of urbanization and suburbanization processes on the development of so-called satellite cities, which incorporate settlements located within the area of gravity of some cities on a higher level of the centrality (Falťan, 2019).…”

“…Suburban developments are increasingly shaped by the combined effects of residential preferences and employment concentration, and the debate on the nature and state of such suburban areas is developing dynamically. In the context of deindustrialisation processes in peripheral areas, where it seems difficult to create services sector jobs for compensation, Hilal, Legras and Cavailhès (2018) examine the role of employment concentration within centres and sub-centres. This is an important but often overlooked factor that may be able to explain current characteristics of suburbanisation.…”

“…The spread of cities, experienced in most developed countries, can be explained in part by the search for lower property prices than in town and by better transport links. Households can commute quickly to employment areas and commercial, cultural and educational infrastructures and businesses enjoy good market access (Hilal et al, 2017). These two factors are compounded by the search for landscapes with a "green" setting and vast open spaces.…”
