Carrot (Daucus carota), one of the most economically important root vegetables, shows a wide range of morphological and biochemical diversity. However, there is a lack of simultaneous systematic study regarding the biochemical composition and morphological characteristics in carrot genetic resources, which is crucial for crop improvement. For this reason, the morphological characteristics, carotenoids, and free sugar content of 180 carrot genetic resources grown in open field conditions from March to June 2020 were accessed to select the lines for a potential breeding program. Altogether, 15 qualitative and 4 quantitative agronomical characteristics were evaluated and grouped into four categories based on root color (orange, yellow, white, and purple). Three carotenoids (lutein, α-carotene, and β-carotene) and three free sugars (fructose, glucose, and sucrose) were also analyzed. The results revealed wide genetic variation in both qualitative and quantitative traits. Most of the genetic resources were orange (n = 142), followed by white (n = 16), yellow (n = 14), and purple (n = 8). Carotenoid profile and content were highly dependent on root color and showed wide genetic variability, while sugar content and profile were independent of the root color. Alpha- and β- carotene were the major carotenoids in orange carrots representing 43.3 and 41.0% of total carotenoids. In contrast, lutein was most dominant in other colored carrots (79.7–98.6% of total carotenoids). In most of the genetic resources, sucrose was the most dominant free sugar, followed by glucose and fructose. The results of this study showed that some genetic resources elevated carotenoid and sugar content. The morphological and biochemical diversity observed in this study might be useful for improving the agronomic traits and biochemical content of carrot lines for breeding programs.

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of carrot varieties at Adigrat and Atsbi area of Tigray region in 2017 and 2018 cropping season. RCBD was used for the experiment. Data on plant height(cm), leaf number, leaf weight(gm), root length(cm), root diameter(cm) and root yield in terms of ton per hectare were collected and analyzed. Plant height was highly significantly (p<0. 01) influenced by carrot cultivars at both locations. Leaf number plant-1 was significantly (p<0.05) affected by carrot cultivars only at Atsbi area in 2017. Leaf weight plant-1 was significantly influenced by cultivars at Adigrat. In 2017 cropping season, root yield ha-1 was non significantly (p≥0.05) affected by cultivars at Adigrat and Atsbi areas. In 2018, plant height, leaf number plant-1 and leaf weight plant-1 were significantly influenced by carrot cultivars at Adigrat. In 2018, root diameter was significantly affected by cultivars at Adigrat. The maximum plant height (50.63 cm) was recorded from DzARC-5 and Nantes cultivars in 2017 at Adigrat. The tallest (46.13 cm) plant height was observed from DzARC-5 varieties in 2017 at Atsbi location. DzARC-5 cultivar showed the maximum leaf weight plant-1 at Adigrat and Atsbi areas with leaf weight plant-1 of 65.07 and 40.69 respectively since 2017. In 2018 cropping season, the tallest plant height was recorded from cultivar DzARC-5 (50.81 cm) at Adigrat. The maximum leaf number plant-1 was obtained from DzARC-5 (9.81) at Adigrat location in 2018 production year. In 2018 cropping season, the maximum root yield (30.04ton ha-1) was recorded on AUA-108 cultivar at Adigrat. AUA-108 cultivar is recommended at Adigrat and Atsbi areas. Further, it is important to reinvestigate the trial at Atsbi as the experiment conducted there for one season alone.

Parsnip (Pastinaca sativa L.) is an edible root that has long been used in cooking and preparing baby food and livestock. The present study was performed to evaluate the phenotypic diversity of 69 accessions of this species to select superiors in terms of root quality in Paykan village, Isfahan province, Iran, in the year 2022. There were significant differences among the accessions investigated (ANOVA, p < .01). Coefficient of variation (CV) was more than 20.00% in the majority of measured characters (64 out of 66 characters), indicating high diversity among the accessions. Foliage width (crown) ranged from 10 to 55 cm with an average of 32.32 cm. Root shape was tapering (33), obtriangular (10), narrow oblong (5), wide oblong (5), obovate (13), and fusiform (3). Root length ranged from 81.2 to 294 mm with an average of 166.44 mm. Root diameter at its middle point ranged from 15.58 to 125.12 mm with an average of 51.83 mm. Root weight ranged from 15 to 1200 g with an average of 315.36 g. Inner core (xylem) pigmentation/color was cream yellow (11 accessions), light yellow (12), yellow (42), dark yellow (2), and yellow–light orange (2). In the cluster analysis based on Ward's method, the accessions were divided into two main clusters according to morphological traits. This is despite the fact that parsnip is part of the medicinal plant native and valuable in most farms in tropical cities. Compared with carrots, parsnip plants are more adaptable to different environmental conditions. The accessions studied here showed high phenotypic diversity. Based on ideal values of the important and commercial characters of parsnip, such as root length, root weight, inner core (xylem) pigmentation/color, root shape, flesh color intensity, flesh palatability, and total soluble solids, 14 genotypes, including Parsnip‐3, Parsnip‐9, Parsnip‐24, Parsnip‐32, Parsnip‐32, Parsnip‐48, Parsnip‐51, Parsnip‐52, Parsnip‐58, Parsnip‐60, Parsnip‐62, Parsnip‐65, Parsnip‐67, and Parsnip‐69, were promising and are recommended for cultivation.
