Performance of six multi-stage hybrid wetland systems for treating high-content wastewater in the cold climate of Hokkaido, Japan

Abstract: The performance of six multi-stage hybrid wetland systems, which were designed and constructed for treating high-content wastewater, was evaluated in the cold climate of Hokkaido, northern Japan. The systems were designed to treat four kinds of wastewater: dairy wastewater (three systems, average inflow 4.9-46.6 m 3 .d -1 , average inflow content 2,400-5,000mg.COD.l -1 , 2-5 years of operation); wastewater from a pig farm, including liquid food washing wastewater (one system, 4.1 m Keywords hybrid constructed … Show more

“…The OTRs were proportional to the LONs in the two BVFs. This result agreed with previous findings (Kato et al 2013). Furthermore, the ratio of LONs and OTRs in the BVF system was higher than that obtained in existing studies (Cooper 2005;Kato et al 2013), thereby indicating improved pollutant removal performance.…”

“…A high hydraulic load can also induce clogging and system breakdown, thereby reducing the efficiency of pollutant removal (Kato et al 2013). Unlike the systems proposed by Cui et al (2010), Prochanska et al (2007) and Bastviken et al (2009), the MBVF system presented in the current study effectively promoted operating HLR.…”

“…Among the recent developments, hybrid sub-surface CWs are becoming more popular because of their higher treatment potential (Noorvee et al, 2005;Öövel, 2007;Tuszyñska and Obarska-Pempkowiak, 2008;Justin, 2009;Singh et al, 2009;Kato et al, 2010Kato et al, , 2013Sharma et al, 2012;Serrano et al, 2011;Vymazal and Kröpfelova, 2011). The Performance of a CW is affected by a range of factors such as operational mode (loading rate, continuous or batchload) and environmental conditions (climate, season, temperature etc.)…”
