The application of plant growth regulators can manipulate the development of cultivated plants, and their physiological effects may be reflected in the physiological quality of the seeds. This study evaluated the effects of plant growth regulators (PGR) on the physiological quality of crambe seeds produced in the 2014 and 2015 harvests. During crop development, we applied two foliar sprayings of the following treatments: 1) control treatment with distilled water; 2) indole-3-acetic acid 100 mg L-1 (IAA); 3) 3-gibberellic acid P.A. 100 mg L-1 (GA3); 4) commercial PGR Stimulate® 6 mL L-1. The seeds were harvested and evaluated for water content, germination percentage and germination speed index (GSI), electrical conductivity and concentrations of leached Ca, Mg and K ions. Means were compared by Tukey´s and Dunnett tests (p<0.05). Applying Stimulate® increased the germination percentage and the germination speed index, while IAA application showed an opposite effect, increasing the electrical conductivity of crambe seeds. Calcium leaching decreased with IAA application, and all regulators reduced K leaching. We therefore infer that the application of plant growth regulators influences the physiological quality of crambe seeds.

Pericarp anatomy and hormone profiles of cypselas in dormant and non‐dormant inbred sunflower lines

The pericarp anatomy and the effects of storage after harvest, storage temperature and early cypsela imbibition on phytohormone profiles were studied in inbred sunflower lines B123 and B91. On day 0, germination of B123 cypselas was near 0%, indicating dormancy, whereas that of B91 cypselas was near 100%, indicating non-dormancy. The germination of B123 and B91 on day 33 at room temperature (25 °C) storage was similar. Cell wall thickness and sclerification of the pericarp were higher in B123 than B91, suggesting that structural characteristics may contribute to physical dormancy in B123. Jasmonates (JAs), salicylic acid (SA) and abscisic acid (ABA) were measured in dry and imbibed pericarps. SA content of dry pericarp was higher on day 33 than day 0. SA content during imbibition on day 33 was similar for room and low (-20 °C) storage temperatures. ABA content after 12 h imbibition was similar on days 0 and 33 at low temperature, but it increased on day 33 at room temperature for B123. 12-Oxo-phytodienoic acid (OPDA) was maximal on day 0 for B123, but peaked at day 33 at low temperature for B91. JA was higher on days 0 and 33 at room temperature as compared with low temperature. Our findings indicate that pericarp hormone profiles are affected in the two lines with different dormancy degree depending on storage conditions and imbibition processes.

Co‐inoculation with Bradyrhizobium and Azospirillum Increases Yield and Quality of Soybean Seeds

The use of microorganisms is a very recurrent reality in agriculture. Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Azospirillum brasilense benefits the development of plants. There was an increase in the yield components of soybean. Microorganisms are widely used in agriculture. Among them, the bacterial genus Bradyrhizobium is commonly found in cultivated soils, forming symbiotic relationships with legume species. This work aimed to evaluate whether co‐inoculation with Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Azospirillum brasilense influences the components of production, yield, and physiological quality of soybean seeds. The experiment was conducted in three consecutive crop seasons (from 2014–2015 to 2016–2017), in the municipality of Chapadão do Sul, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The experiment consisted of a randomized complete block design, with seven treatments and four replications, using the following treatments: T1, control (without inoculation); T2, inoculation with B. japonicum (150 mL); T3, inoculation with A. brasilense (150 mL); T4, co‐inoculation with B. japonicum + A. brasilense (75 mL + 75 mL); T5, co‐inoculation with B. japonicum + A. brasilense (150 mL + 150 mL); T6, co‐inoculation with B. japonicum + A. brasilense (225 mL+ 225 mL); and T7, co‐inoculation with B. japonicum + A. brasilense (300 mL+ 300 mL). Each treatment (dose) was applied to 50 kg of soybean seeds. The study evaluated the agronomic variables number of nodules per plant, dry shoot biomass per plant, plant height, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, mass of 100 seeds, and grain yield; and the seed quality variables first germination count, germination, emergence, emergence speed index, electric conductivity, accelerated aging, and tetrazolium. The co‐inoculation of soybean seeds with B. japonicum and A. brasilense benefits the development of plants, increasing yield components, grain yield, and seed quality. The most efficient level was 225 mL of each inoculant for 50 kg of seed.
