Performance of Maraging Steel Sleeves Produced by SLM with Subsequent Age Hardening

Abstract: In the paper, the researches on sleeves made out of maraging steel 1.2709 using selective laser melting (SLM) technology are presented. This additive technology is recognized as favorable for the environment, due to 100% use of material and durability of manufactured details. The fabricated sleeves underwent subsequent tests, in particular, microhardness, porosity and homogeneity of the material was examined before and after heat treatment and salt bath nitrocarburizing process. Two kinds of fatigue tests were… Show more

“…In this study, it was of interest to investigate the mechanical properties of additive manufacturing (AM) samples produced by SLM and the potential of the application of this technology in the design and manufacture of hydraulic components for aerospace. A previous study carried out on the design of the presented actuator demonstrated the performance of maraging steel sleeves produced by SLM with subsequent age hardening [25]. This paper presents the extended results of mechanical tests of SLM samples, including tensile fatigue and pressure fatigue tests (Sections 2 and 3).…”

“…The Domin company, in cooperation with Rzeszów University of Technology, conducted extensive research on the endurance of maraging steel 1.2709 as far as the process of laser melting is concerned (the actual research of SLM technology in relation to maraging steel 1.2709 is also described in the work of other teams [23,24]). Furthermore, researchers have assessed whether the material in question may be used in aircraft for hydraulic components [25]. Hydraulic actuators have a highly complex internal structure, especially regarding operating conditions.…”

“…AM allows the production of non-standard parts from metals, ceramics, and polymers without the need for molds or the processing that is typical for conventional production, when using traditional loss technologies [5,6]. While conventional manufacturing is subjected to the processing constraints that are associated with industrial mass production, AM enables a faster conversion from the design stage, and production of custom objects that are tailored to the requirements of individual people and specific applications [6][7][8]. This flexibility in creation, and the incredible decrease in the cost of 3D printing, has led scientists from around the world to become interested in this technology as a tool.…”
