Performance of dairy calves fed milk, milk replacer or post-weaning concentrate with acidifiers

Abstract: -The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the addition of acidifiers to milk, milk replacer or post-weaning concentrate on the performance and health status of weaning and post-weaning calves. Three experiments were carried out, in the first experiment 62 Holstein × Zebu crossbred calves (males and females), reared from birth to 60 days of age, were distributed and fed milk with or without acidifier. From the third day, the calves were suckled (5L of milk/d) for 56 days, split into two meals. … Show more

“…Microbial imbalances might permit the colonization by pathogenic and opportunistic bacteria and the appearance of many different syndromes with deleterious effect on host (Maldonado, Ruiz, Otero, Sesma, & Elena, 2012). Moreover, in calves less than 10 days old, infection with E. coli and other microorganisms commonly cause severe diarrhoea, which leads to high levels of morbidity and mortality (Ribeiro et al, 2009). In older calves, gastrointestinal diseases can determine slower growth and lower average daily weight gain (Busconi, Reggi, & Fogher, 2008).…”

“…It is during this period that calves develop diarrhea, the most common health concern and cause of death during the preweaning period. Calves with diarrhea require prompt attention and care; failure to treat these calves can lead to high levels of morbidity and mortality (Kertz, 2003;Lundborg, 2004;Ribeiro et al, 2009). Diarrhea has been related to an increase of coliform bacteria counts in the intestines and a decrease in Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria counts (Krehbiel et al, 2003;Ouwehand et al, 2002).…”

“…All calves are fed whole milk mixed with non-saleable milk after pasteurization. Milk fed at an amount of 5 L/d divided into 2 portions offered in the morning (3 L) and evening (2 L) for 56 days (Ribeiro et al, 2009) and increase to 2.0 % of the body weight until weaning. The calves had a free access to drinking water for the entire experimental period.…”
