Performance of bioreactor landfill with waste mined from a dumpsite

Abstract: Emissions from landfills via leachate and gas are influenced by state and stability of the organic matter in the solid waste and the environmental conditions within the landfill. This paper describes a modified, ecologically sound waste treatment technique, where municipal solid waste is anaerobically treated in a lysimeter-scale landfill bioreactor with leachate recirculation to enhance organic degradation. The results demonstrate a substantial decrease in organic matter (BOD 99%, COD 88% and TOC 81%) and a c… Show more

“…with the values reported in the literature having higher moisture content for fresh MSW and lower moisture content for mined waste (Karthikeyan et al 2007 andSri Shalini et al 2010). The volatile fraction was higher in fresh MSW (44 %) and mined MSW (21 %) than slurry (17 %).…”

“…The presence of NH 3 and HNO 2 affected NOB activity [13,18] [18]. But in partial nitritation process, half of the influent NH 4 + -N was converted to NO 2 --N by AOB, with presence of the unionized forms of their substrate and product NH 3 and HNO 2 [9,18].…”

“…The dumpsites cause environmental degradation since they are susceptible to open burning, groundwater pollution and exposed to scavengers and disease vectors (Karthikeyan et al, 2007). Most of these dumpsites are very close to highly populated urban areas and does not have enough capacity to receive waste for long time (Gunawardana et al, 2009).…”
