Purpose This paper aims to minimize the total carbon emissions and costs and also maximize the total social benefits. Design/methodology/approach The present study develops a mathematical model for a closed-loop supply chain network of perishable products so that considers the vital aspects of sustainability across the life cycle of the supply chain network. To evaluate carbon emissions, two different regulating policies are studied. Findings According to the obtained results, increasing the lifetime of the perishable products improves the incorporated objective function (IOF) in both the carbon cap-and-trade model and the model with a strict cap on carbon emission while the solving time increases in both models. Moreover, the computational efficiency of the carbon cap-and-trade model is higher than that of the model with a strict cap, but its value of the IOF is worse. Results indicate that efficient policies for carbon management will support planners to achieve sustainability in a cost-effectively manner. Originality/value This research proposes a mathematical model for the sustainable closed-loop supply chain of perishable products that applies the significant aspects of sustainability across the life cycle of the supply chain network. Regional economic value, regional development, unemployment rate and the number of job opportunities created in the regions are considered as the social dimension.

Several studies have addressed SCND considering different issues, such as product characteristics (Coelho & Laporte, 2014), number of echelons (Srivathsan & Kamath, 2017), network flows (Ivanov et al, 2017), transport (Cui et al, 2016), technologies (Fard et al, 2017), and characteristics of facilities (Shafiee et al, 2014). In the case of the tilapia fillet SCND, some features considered should include: (a) four echelons in the SC, these being suppliers, fish farms, slaughterhouses and demand points; (b) organic waste should be recycled in a waste processing industry; (c) forward flows start from suppliers to demand points, and reverse flow from the slaughter processing industry to waste processors.…”

Growing concerns about sustainability lead decision-makers to include in the supply chain network design, environmental and social impacts as well as economic objectives, which requires a balanced multi-criteria approach. In this paper, a multiobjective mixed integer model for a regional supply chain network of a fish processing industry is developed. The model and decision-making process is analysed using approximation and visualization of Pareto frontier in criteria space in the form of Interactive Decision Maps. For test purposes, the data of the network of tilapia fillet processing in West Paraná, Brazil, are used. A reasonable strategy is formulated, representing a compromise between different conflicting criteria in the supply chain profit, carbon dioxide emissions, number of suppliers, number of hired workers, costs and revenue.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present a methodology to structure the problem of retail out of stock (OOS). This methodology allows investigating risk factors and barriers related to the main causes and consequences that lead to OOS occurring.Design/methodology/approachThe proposed methodology to structure the OOS problem is based on the bow- ie tool, which allows better visualisation, understanding and analysis of a complete OOS scenario. This proposal comprises exploring the main causes and consequences of OOS, the barriers to prevention and mitigation, the escalation factors to control undesirable events and to define actions to eliminate or mitigate the OSS risk.FindingsSeveral potential causal risk factors, related to technical, behavioural, cultural and organisational aspects, were identified with this methodology. With the analysis of the OOS scenario, it was observed that the factors that lead to the OOS risk are preventable. In order to improve existing barriers or implement new barriers, a set of actions can be recommended to reduce or eliminate OOS risk factors.Originality/valueFrom a better understanding of hazard, the bow-tie methodology allows identifying crucial factors that could be acted upon to reduce the incidence of OSS. Thus, the value is to propose a methodology that allows establishing the preventive and protective barriers necessaries and the escalation factors related to each of these to help structure the problem and consequently reduce the OOS in retail organisations.
