The cloud computing paradigm provides virtualized computing resources as on-demand services. This paradigm allows companies to focus on their business issues rather than conceiving and managing complex infrastructures. As a consequence, performance evaluation of cloud computing infrastructures has been receiving considerable attention by cloud service providers as a prominent activity for improving service quality as well as planning modifications in the current infrastructure to support future demands. This paper focus on the capacity planning of processing and storage resources related to an Electronic Funds Transfer service hosted on the Amazon EC2 cloud infrastructure.

Public/private decision makers have faced challenges to improve healthcare services for supporting the increasing demand and simultaneously reducing the associated costs. Although the adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs) are important in this context, the current service status should be firstly examined and different configurations/scenarios quantitatively evaluated before any further adjustment. Formal methods are of great importance, since they provide mathematical means for quantitative evaluation of systems and allow property analysis/verification. This paper presents an approach based on stochastic Petri nets for the performance evaluation of medical imaging service, adopting a real-world case study to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.

The use of electronic medias for payment has been increasingly adopted, instead of employing money in currency paper or check directly. Considering this electronic funds transfer (EFT) scenario, we developed a model called GetLB which comprises not only a completely new and efficient scheduler but also a cooperative communication infrastructure for handling heterogeneous and dynamic environments. The scientific contribution consists of a scheduling heuristic that combines static data from transactions and dynamic one from processing nodes to overcome the limitations of Round-Robin. Besides the GetLB's description, this article also presents a prototype evaluation by using both traces and configurations obtained with a real EFT company.
