Performance Improvement for Small-Scale Wind Turbine System Based on Maximum Power Point Tracking Control

Abstract: This paper proposes a strategy for performance improvement of small-scale wind turbine systems using maximum power point tracking control (MPPT). In this study, wind-turbine systems which use permanent magnet synchronous generators and converter devices are modeled in Simulink-Matlab software. In order to increase the power generated, MPPT is used based on the extended perturb and observe (PO) method. This algorithm has the ability to improve the speed of the turbine without oscillation. To analyze the ability… Show more

“…The step-up converter, also named DC-DC boost converter, is widely used in many applications such as photovoltaic, fuel cells and wind power systems [39][40][41][42]. As shown in Figure 2, a DC-DC boost converter consists of inductance (L), switching element (transistor), a diode (D) and a capacitor (C).…”

“…Once calculated C P , λ (and ω t ) can be found in the C P (λ) curve. Since the pitch control for MPPT employs more advanced tools than the ones used here [20][21][22], this work will adopt a constant power coefficient equal to C max P across region I, and the cubic relation (42) in region II.…”

“…Chen and Hung proposed a systematic experimental verification of chaos-embedded sliding mode extremum in order to determine the MPPT control, thereby obtaining better dynamic results than traditional control schemes [31]. An MPPT control based on the extended perturb and observe method was proposed in [32], proving that the proposed methodology increased the efficiency of the small wind turbine system. Recently, different sensor-less algorithms have also been presented [33][34][35].…”
