Performance guaranteed inertia emulation for diesel-wind system feed microgrid via model reference control

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper, a model reference control based inertia emulation strategy is proposed. Desired inertia can be precisely emulated through this control strategy so that guaranteed performance is ensured. A typical frequency response model with parametrical inertia is set to be the reference model. A measurement at a specific location delivers the information of disturbance acting on the diesel-wind system to the reference model. The objective is for the speed of the diesel-wind system to track the refer… Show more

“…The solid lines in each of these figures show the best fit linear regression between output and targets that that rarely occurs in practice. The regression value R is a statistical measure of how close the data is to the fitted regression line, that can be computed by a general formula described as [32]: R = r 1 MSE of regression line MSE of the mean of the data (12) As shown in all regression curves, all regression values are close to one, which means that the model illustrates all the variability of the output data around its mean.…”

“…Beside these 978-1-7281-8192-9/21 $31.00 ©2021 IEEE primary methods, in order to relieve the shortage of inertia and frequency excursion, virtual inertia frequency control strategy based on a frequency error integral loop was proposed in [10]. Since the frequency excursion can be caused by a generator trip or a load change in the grid that will act as large disturbance and will affect system reliability [11], a novel idea using model reference control method in order to capture the desired inertia response during a large disturbance in the microgrids was expressed in [12]. However, obtaining an optimal control signal is another concern among the proposed control strategies.…”

“…Motivated by these issues, a novel inertia emulation strategy for current-mode WTGs is proposed. This strategy has been implemented in our preliminary work [16] on a diesel-wind system. The model reference control (MRC) concept [17] is employed to provide the capability of precisely emulating inertia.…”

“…In this paper, a more detailed type-3 WTG model with field-oriented control (FOC) is employed than was utilized in the preliminary work [16]. Additional formulations are introduced to limit the size of the controller gain.…”
