The compactability of an asphalt mixture is related to the heating temperature of the materials, but the heating temperature of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is limited by the production process of hot-in-plant recycled mixtures. To choose a reasonable heating temperature for RAP according to the compactability, the compaction energy ratio (CER) obtained from the Superpave gyratory compactor compaction curve was developed. The CERs of fourteen kinds of asphalt mixtures made with different RAPs were compared, all of which were different in type, content, and heating temperature. The results indicated that CER is an effective energy index to evaluate the workability of a bituminous mixture, and it considers both the accumulated energy after each gyration and the number of gyrations. It was also found that increasing the heating temperature of the RAP cannot always improve the workability of the recycled mixture, because the higher heating temperature caused more hard-aged bitumen to be blended with soft virgin bitumen during the mixing process. At the same RAP heating temperature, increasing the RAP content made it more difficult to compact the mixture, especially for RAPs with styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) modified bitumen, and the recycled mixtures with SBS-modified bitumen were more difficult to compact than those with nonmodified bitumen.

The determination of mixing and compaction temperatures through the Equiviscous method has been defined as the standard method and it is designed for the base bitumen (unmodified bitumen) based on the viscosity measurements. The implementation of the Equiviscous method for the modified bitumen resulted in high mixing and compaction temperatures which may not be required during the construction of the asphalt mixtures. This study aims to investigate several alternative methods proposed in the literature named as high shear rate method, zero shear viscosity method, steady shear flow method, and phase angle method. Besides, the obtained mixing and compaction temperatures results are compared with the standard (equiviscous) method. For this purpose, 50/70 penetration grade bitumen modified with 5 % elastomeric type – Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS), and 1.5 % Reactive Elastomeric Terpolymer type – Elvaloy (RET) has been used. The study also aims to measure the applicability of the proposed alternative methods for the warm mix asphalt involving organic and chemical additives. The results have shown that for the polymer modified bitumen, the application of all proposed methods in the literature resulted in lower mixing and compaction temperatures compared to the Equiviscous method. While for the warm mix asphalt, the implementation of the steady shear flow method resulted in lesser temperatures compared to the Equiviscous method.

Performance of High Rap Half-Warm Mix Asphalt

The current global situation regarding climate change makes it necessary to promote the circular economy and the use of more environmentally friendly technologies in the construction sector. To that end, it is of interest to deepen our understanding of the performance of half-warm mix asphalt (HWMA) manufactured with high proportions of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). Thus, in the present study, a laboratory analysis was carried out in which the behavior of HWMA manufactured with 100% RAP and without rejuvenators was compared with that of a control mix, i.e., an HWMA manufactured with 0% RAP. In particular, we analyzed the compaction energy with a gyratory compactor, mixing time and temperature, volumetric properties, moisture damage resistance through indirect tensile tests after immersion (ITS), stiffness based on the resilient modulus, resistance to permanent deformation using wheel tracking tests, and fatigue resistance through indirect tensile fatigue tests (ITFT). Both mixtures displayed adequate volumetric and mechanical properties, but the performance of the high-RAP HWMA was better than that of the control mixture in terms of resistance to permanent deformation in hot areas. In addition, the high-RAP HWMA without rejuvenators could provide energy and material savings, thus promoting sustainable development.
