Evaluating the performance of rejuvenated asphalt mixes is crucial for pavement design and construction, as using a rejuvenator not only boosts recycling and contributes to positive effects on the environment but also increases the sensitivity to rutting and moisture. This study was executed to evaluate the effect of a warm mix asphalt (WMA) antistripping agent, namely nano-ZycoTherm, on the moisture-induced damage and rutting potential of asphalt mixtures containing 30% and 60% aged (RAP) binder and rejuvenated with 12% waste engine oil (WEO). For this purpose, the rutting resistance of asphalt mixes in wet and dry conditions was examined utilizing a loaded wheel tracker. In addition, the impacts of moisture on the performance of the mixtures were evaluated using different experiments, such as modified Lottman (AASHTO T283), resilient modulus, dynamic creep, aggregate coating and wheel tracking tests. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis were performed to identify the functional groups, which would be significant in terms of moisture damage, and to assess the thermal stability of binder samples, respectively. The results revealed that the rejuvenation of aged binder with WEO increases the moisture susceptibility of the mixtures; however, the addition of ZycoTherm was found to enhance the moisture resistance of WEO-rejuvenated mixtures. Furthermore, the results indicated that the WEO-rejuvenated mixtures modified with ZycoTherm exhibited a better rutting resistance in a wet condition compared to that of WEO-rejuvenated and conventional HMA mixtures. However, the rejuvenated mixtures modified with ZycoTherm showed poorer rutting performance in a dry condition. In summary, the adoption of the WMA antistripping agent, RAP binder and WEO rejuvenation techniques demonstrated satisfactory outcomes in terms of rutting resistance and moisture susceptibility, and also, these techniques are much less expensive to implement.

Effects of Laboratory Ageing on the FTIR Measurements of Water-Foamed Bio-Fluxed Asphalt Binders

The study investigated the effects of laboratory ageing on the fluxed and water-foamed asphalt binders in scope of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic measurements of ageing indicators and changes in their chemical composition. The investigated binders included two paving grades, two polymer modified asphalt binders, and a highly modified asphalt binder. The bio-flux additive was produced from rapeseed methyl esters in an oxidation reaction in the presence of a metal catalyst and organic peroxide. The use of the bio-origin additive, in particular oil derivatives, was aimed at softening and better foaming of asphalt binders. This modification is possible due to the good mixability of vegetable oils with an asphalt binder, which gives a homogeneous product with reduced stiffness. The study involved the rolling thin film oven, short-term, and the pressure ageing vessel, long term, and ageing to induce oxidation on the evaluated asphalt binders. The addition of the bio-flux additive has significantly decreased the measured content of ketone compounds related to oxidation in both non-aged and aged asphalt binders, although this effect after ageing were far smaller in magnitude. Additionally, both ageing processes decreased significantly the absorbances in the ester spectral bands specific to the bio-flux additive. All mentioned effects were similar in magnitude in all tested asphalt binders.

For evaluating the water stability of hot-mixed renewable asphalt mixture (HRM), the traditional methods are all tested under still water conditions. Except for damage in still water conditions, the hydrodynamic pore pressure generated by the tire driving on the surface water has a great impact. Thus, the RAP contents of the HRMs were designed at 0%, 30%, 45% and 60% with AC-25 gradation. Then, the self-designed evaluation methods of water stability and dynamic modulus were studied. Finally, the mechanism of the influence of hydrodynamic pore pressure damage on HRMs was studied. The results show that the water stability of HRM containing 30% RAP is equivalent to that of 45% RAP, and the water stability of HRM containing 60% RAP decreases significantly. The Contabro test after MIST treatment can be used as an evaluation method for hydrodynamic pore pressure damage on HRM. Low-speed, heavy-load traffic and larger RAP content have greater damage to the mixture after hydrodynamic pore pressure damage. The performance differences between the aged bitumen and pure bitumen, as well as the aged minerals and new minerals, are continuing to be enlarged in hydrodynamic pore pressure conditions, finally affecting the water stability and dynamic modulus of the HRMs.
