Performance Evaluation of Fishery Enterprises Using Data Envelopment Analysis—A Malmquist Model

Abstract: In Vietnam, fishing is a crucial source of nutrition and employment, which not only affects the development of the domestic economy but is also closely related to exports, heavily influencing the economy and foreign exchange. However, the Vietnamese fishery sector has been facing many challenges in innovating production technology, improving product quality, and expanding markets. Hence, the fishery enterprises need to find solutions to increase labor productivity and enhance competitiveness while minimizing d… Show more

“…From this perspective, one organization is more efficient than another when it achieves the same amount of output using less inputs. Among the main available research on efficiency analysis, there are contributions of Thach, Vo, and Lee [5], Wang et al [6], Venkadasalam, Mohamad, and Sifat [7], Quynh, Hailu, Schilizzi, and Iftekhar [8], Sangun, Guney, and Berk [9], Laso et al [10], Pinello et al [11], Gigentika et al [12], Chen et al [13], and Castilla-Espino et al [14].…”

“…Wang et al [6] used DEA, namely the Malmquist model, to evaluate the performance of 17 fisheries firms in decision making units (DMUs) in Vietnam from 2015 to 2018. The purpose of this study was to present a four-year review of the Vietnamese fishery sector in terms of technical efficiency, technological progress, and total factor production.…”

“…This mechanism can help fishery managers in formulating plans for national and regional fishing capacity management actions and provide optimization references for the next step in offshore fishing management decisions. Combined with the research literature of the preface, DEA, stochastic frontier method, and regression method are conducive in carrying out relevant research in the fishery field internationally, which mainly includes the following: guiding the sustainable development of fishery population in terms of fishery resources and population [22][23][24][25][26]; studying the efficiency of fishing capacity of fishing vessels and fleets [27][28][29][30][31][32][33]; studying production efficiency, technical efficiency, and economic efficiency of fisheries [34,35]; studying quota and fishing effort [36,37]; and studying the performance of fishery enterprises and the capacity levels of fishermen [38,39]. Table 1 summarizes the relevant literature.…”
