Electromagnetic non-destructive testing/evaluation is an important means for assessment of the performance of chairlift ropes in a mining installation. The visual method produces the possibility of inadequate inspection due to its subjectivity.Magnetic flaw detectors, which measure loss of metallic area (LMA) and detect local faults (LF), such as broken wires and other faults of the ropes, are used to determine rope wear. Regular non-destructive evaluation/testing (NDE/NDT) inspections provide a powerful tool for monitoring the rate of degradation of a rope. The effective technology for these devices depends on the magnetic properties of the steel wire rope. An attempt has been made in this paper to evaluate the performance of ropes in two chairlift man-riding systems in an incline coal mine in India.
