It is of great importance for pipeline systems to be is efficient, cost-effective and safe during the transportation of the liquids and gases. However, underground pipelines often experience leaks due to corrosion, human destruction or theft, long-term Earth movement, natural disasters and so on. Leakage or explosion of the operating pipeline usually cause great economical loss, environmental pollution or even a threat to citizens, especially when these accidents occur in human-concentrated urban areas. Therefore, the surveying of the routed pipeline is of vital importance for the Pipeline Integrated Management (PIM). In this paper, a comprehensive review of the Micro-Inertial Measurement Unit (MIMU)-based intelligent Pipeline Inspection Gauge (PIG) multi-sensor fusion technologies for the transport of liquids and gases purposed for small-diameter pipeline (D<30cm) surveying is demonstrated. Firstly, four types of typical small-diameter intelligent PIGs and their corresponding pipeline-defects inspection technologies and defects-positioning technologies are investigated according to the various pipeline defects inspection and localization principles. Secondly, the multi-sensor fused pipeline surveying technologies are classified into two main categories, the non-inertial-based and the MIMU-based intelligent PIG surveying technology. Moreover, five schematic diagrams of the MIMU fused intelligent PIG fusion technology is also surveyed and analyzed with details. Thirdly, the potential research directions and challenges of the popular intelligent PIG surveying techniques by multi-sensor fusion system are further presented with details. Finally, the review is comprehensively concluded and demonstrated.

Micro-electro-mechanical systems inertial measurement units (MEMS-IMUs) are increasingly being employed for measuring the attitude of bottom hole assemblies (BHAs). However, the reliability and measurement precision of a single MEMS-IMU may not meet drilling’s stringent needs. Redundant MEMS-IMU systems can effectively enhance the reliability and precision. This paper proposes a redundant configuration method for MEMS sensors tailored to BHA attitude measurement. Firstly, based on reliability theory and a cost-benefit analysis, considering factors such as cost, size, and reliability, the optimal number of sensors in the redundant system was determined to be six. Considering the structural characteristics of the BHA, a hollow hexagonal prism-shaped redundant configuration scheme was proposed, ensuring the circulation of drilling fluid within the drill pipe. Next, by employing Kalman filtering to integrate the output data from the six sensors, a virtual IMU (VIMU) was formed. Finally, experimental verification was carried out. The results confirmed that, after redundancy implementation, the velocity random walk of the accelerometer decreased by an average of 58% compared to a single MEMS-IMU, and bias instability was reduced by an average of 54%. The angular random walk of the gyroscope decreased by an average of 58%, and bias instability was reduced by an average of 37%. This research provides a theoretical foundation for enhancing the precision and reliability of BHA attitude measurements.

The muzzle response is the main feature affecting the firing accuracy of weapons. To research the muzzle response characteristics of small unmanned ground vehicles with small arms (SUGVsSA) during shooting, this paper designs a test method that combines an inertial measurement system (IMS) with a high-speed photogrammetric system (HSPS) to measure the muzzle response. That is, an inertial measurement unit (IMU) is fixed onto the gun body to record the three-dimensional angular motion of the barrel; meanwhile, a high-speed camera is used to capture the characteristic markers of the unmanned ground vehicle from the side. After data processing, the muzzle response curves during four consecutive firings when the vehicle is running at different speeds and firing angles are obtained. Considering the presence of noise in muzzle response signals, the wavelet threshold de-noising (WTD) algorithm based on a novel variable threshold function is used to de-noise the test signal. The processing results demonstrate that the WTD algorithm based on the novel variable threshold function can not only suppress noise in the muzzle response signal but also retain the local details of the signal. The combination of the IMS and HSPS complements the muzzle response data and can comprehensively and accurately reflect the muzzle response characteristics of SUGVsSA. As the vehicle speed and firing angle increase, the muzzle vibration intensifies, only when the vehicle speed is 0.3 m/s, and the muzzle maximum elevation angle displacement after each firing decreases when it is stationary. The results presented in this paper may provide a workable reference for understanding the muzzle response characteristics of SUGVsSA and evaluating the firearm compatibility of other unmanned systems.
