Performance effects and economic viability of high-hydrated ethanol fumigation and diesel direct injection in a small compression ignition engine

Abstract: This study investigates the operation of a diesel engine (compression ignition) coupled to an alternator, using mixtures of diesel oil and hydrous ethanol as fuel, with high water content. The mixtures of ethanol and water were injected at the intake manifold (fumigation), while the diesel oil was injected directly in the combustion chamber. The mixtures of ethanol and water were prepared with 90, 80 and 70% of ethanol, at volumetric fraction. The analyzed parameters were energetic and exergetic efficiency, sp… Show more

“…In the experiments, measurements of electrical power were made by means of an energy analyzer and the consumption of fuels gravimetrically by digital scale. With the measurements made, the specific fuel consumption (SFC) in [g/kW•h] was calculated according to Rosa et al (2019b) by Eq. (1).…”

“…Nowadays, there is a growing interest in biofuels, especially those that contribute to the reduction of pollutant emissions. Due to the fossil nature of diesel fuel, it is necessary to study alternative biofuels to replace it, especially in internal combustion engines, which are equipment very present in the current society, both for vehicle propulsion and for electric power generation (Rosa et al, 2019a).…”

“…Generally, renewable fuels have the potential to achieve near zero CO 2 emissions in Well-to-Wheel balance, decreasing greenhouse gas emissions levels [3]. In the literature, many renewable fuels have been investigated and have emerged as a promising candidate to replace conventional fuels, such as biodiesel [4,5], ethanol [6,7] and straight vegetable oils [8,9].…”

“…The most common methods to replace diesel fuel with ethanol in CI engines are the ethanol and diesel blends method [12][13][14] and the ethanol fumigation method [15][16][17][18]. The blend method is the simplest: mixing ethanol to the conventional diesel fuel and injecting the blend directly into the cylinder through the conventional diesel injector.…”
