Performance comparison of biotic indices measuring the ecological status base on soft-bottom macroinvertebrates: a study along the shallow Gomishan lagoon (Southeast Caspian Sea)

Abstract: This paper aims to test the suitability of some biotic indices for their application in Southeast Caspian Sea. For this purpose, the ecological quality of the Gomishan lagoon was assessed using three biotic indices (AMBI, BENTIX, BOPA) during summer and autumn 2010. The results from the application of the biotic indices do not highlight a clear distinction between the stations. The results show that two of the indices (AMBI and BENTIX) are very close in terms of diagnosis (good and high) and seem to generally … Show more

“…Nevertheless, BENTIX now showed better performance than the other two indices (for the reasons mentioned above), which had been found elsewhere (e.g., Kalkan et al, 2007;Pranovi et al, 2007;Simboura and Argyrou, 2010;Spagnolo et al, 2014;Basatnia et al, 2015).…”

“…Each of these coastal regions is a special, delicate environment that is very important as a natural habitat for many different living types. In terms of prospects for agriculture, aquaculture, tourism, and leisure activities, lagoons are also crucial to the socioeconomic framework [4]. However, if the aforementioned socioeconomic benefits are not carefully regulated and supervised, they could become harmful to the ecological environment.…”
