Escalation fuel consumption occurs in various regions of the world. However, world oil reserves decline from year to year so that it becomes scarce and causes oil prices to surge up. This problem can be solved by saving fuel consumption. One method of saving fuel is adding bio-additives from citronella oil as a sustainable resource to diesel fuels. Citronellal, citronellol and geraniol are the main components of citronella oil which can be used as fuel additives. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of citronella oil fractions as bio-additives to the performance of diesel engine. The research stages include: extraction of citronella oil, vacuum fractionation of citronella oil, physical chemical characterization of citronella oil and its fractions, formulation of bio-additive -fuel blending, characterization of blending, and evaluation of fuel efficiency. The effect of concentration of the bio-additives was examined towards three diesel fuels; dexlite, pertamina-dex, and biosolar. The results showed two main fractions of citronella oil; citronellal dominant component (FA) and citronellol-geraniol dominant components (FB). The concentration variation of bio-additives was 0.1–0.5%. Fuel consumption efficiency was tested using diesel engine at an engine speed of 2000 rpm and a load increment of 1000, 2000 and 3000 psi with 7 min running time. The fractions represented the different tendencies to enhance the fuel efficiency up to 46%, influenced by the mixture’s concentration. Generally, citronella oil and the fractions showed the potency as bio-additive to diesel fuels.

Current dynamics of world energy supply have driven various innovations by the industry as well as research communities. Fossil fuels, although experiencing a declining interest due to sustainability issues, remain undeniably crucial since they are nearly irreplaceable in some sectors including electricity generation, it is necessary to continuously establish efforts to improve efficiency of those kinds of fuel. In this work, the authors evaluate the potential of locally sourced essential oils, namely citronella, as a fuel additive in a vision of raising the fuel economy of gasoline RON 90. Citronella oil was selected based on a positive hypothesis deduced from its chemical properties, as mentioned in multiple published works. Tests were made on a generator-set powered by gasoline engine using the mixture of RON 90 and citronella oil of various concentrations as the fuels. In addition, a commercial synthetic additive was also tested alongside the essential oil to provide a comparative figure. Meanwhile other investigators suggest a favorable effect of essential oils, our results show that citronella oil additions lead to higher fuel consumption at the same power level. A similar negative effect was also demonstrated by the synthetic additive. The only sector showing positive results is in terms of exhaust temperature where experiments with citronella additives create lower exhaust temperature as compared to pure gasoline and synthetic additives. However, rooms for innovation remain open by exploring other variables such as higher additive concentrations or combining different kinds of essential oils.

Industrial sector has been focused on the transportation and automotive service due to their essential for many people in every daily life. Currently, almost everyone has a motorized vehicle which also has an effect on improving the country’s economy. On the other hand, this raises concerns about the occurrence of a global warming phenomenon. The more motorized vehicles were extremely impact on increasing the exhaust gasses that also have a negative impact to the environment, including carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Hence, this work tried to reduce the exhaust gas emission through the addition of ethanol and synthetic additive, namely patchouli oil. This case study was conducted using pertamax fuel with octane number 92. We analyzed five different optimization sample that consisting of S1, S2, S3, S4, and S5. Then, the several characterizations also carried out to these samples for supporting the results obtained i.e. density, viscosity, and surface tension. Also, the variation of engine rotation speed (in rpm) is utilized to determine the performance or the impact of the samples made to the environment. The results indicate that the pertamax sample mixed with ethanol and patchouli oil showed an optimal performance in S5, there is no detect of CO emission. Then, S3 for the lowest emission of CO2. Also, S3 for the highest efficient in fuel consumption. Hoping this work has an extremely impact for the reducing an exhaust emission in fuels and increasing the energy efficient of internal combustion engines
