Performance Characterization and Auto-Ignition Performance of a Rapid Compression Machine

Abstract: Abstract:A rapid compression machine (RCM) test bench is developed in this study. The performance characterization and auto-ignition performance tests are conducted at an initial temperature of 293 K, a compression ratio of 9.5 to 16.5, a compressed temperature of 650 K to 850 K, a driving gas pressure range of 0.25 MPa to 0.7 MPa, an initial pressure of 0.04 MPa to 0.09 MPa, and a nitrogen dilution ratio of 35% to 65%. A new type of hydraulic piston is used to address the problem in which the hydraulic buffer… Show more

“…Compression of oil within the groove increases the pressure quickly and this resistive force slows the piston's motion, while the oil seeps from the groove back into the main hydraulic chamber. Careful adjustment of the ring-groove clearances, and any additional transfer ports, e.g., radially through the ring, is needed to achieve precise control of the deceleration profile [132]. Numerous machines currently in use employ this technique.…”

“…The RCM (Beijing University of Technology, Beijing, China) used in this study has been introduced in a previous paper [22], and only a brief overview will be given here. The RCM is mainly composed of pneumatic drive, hydraulic control, reactor cylinder, gas supply, and data acquisition systems.…”

“…When it comes to the exploration processes, despite widely popularized simulation methods [24,25] experimental research and development works still remain significant. This is a solution including basic research using test engines (single or multi cylinder) and rapid compression machines [26][27][28][29]. These machines, owing to their research potential (including optical access), are widely used in the analysis of the process of injection and combustion [30] because they reduce the cost and improve the intensity of the development works compared to transparent engines.…”
