Performance Characteristics of UV and Visible Spectrophotometry Methods for Quantitative Determination of Norfloxacin in Tablets

Abstract: This work has proposed the development and validation of ultraviolet (UV) and visible (Vis) spectrophotometric methods for the determination of norfloxacin in the tablets. The proposed methods were applied to pharmaceutical formulation and percent amount of drug estimated (96.08% for UV method and 102.65% for Vis method) and was found in good agreement with the label claim. Using the UV method norfloxacin showed an absorption maximum at 277 nm, in 0.1 M hydrochloridric acid medium, whereas for the Vis spectrop… Show more

“…[62][63][64][65] However, it is a non-selective method and is not suitable for the detection of degradation products and impurities. [66] Spectrophotometric methods are also found in literature for other fluoroquinolones, such as ciprofloxacin, [67] norfloxacin, [68,69] orbifloxacin, [70] lomefloxacin, [71] gatifloxacin, [72] and sparfloxacin. [73,74] Costa et al (2014) developed and validated a microbiological agar diffusion method for the potency analysis of besifloxacin in ophthalmic suspension.…”

“…The relative standard deviation did not exceed 1.42% for Vis method. The visible spectrophotometric method was based on the reaction of norfloxacin as a π-electron donor with chloranilic acid as π-acceptor, resulting in a highly colored complex. The purple color of norfloxacin-chloranilic acid complex immediately reached its maximum intensity at room temperature and remained stable up to 30 min 73 .…”

“…Comparison of this method with reported methods has been presented in Table 7. This proposed method is more sensitive compared to some of the established method as shown by the molar absorptivity 13,14,19 .…”
