Performance Analysis of SCTP Protocol in WiFi Network

Abstract: The Internet Protocol Stack provides a set of transport layer protocols. There are two dominant types of transport layer protocol used in the Internet: UDP (User Datagram Protocol) and TCP (Transmission Control Protocol). The transport layer provides end-to-end information transfer across a network with the quality of service needed by the application. In this paper, we provide a performance comparison of SCTP, TCP and UDP protocols in WLAN environments for different traffic flow: VoIP, video streaming and dat… Show more

“…Normal throughput is expressed in units of bits per second (bps) or packets per second (pps). In addition, Boussen et al (2009) defined throughput as measured in kbps, as the amount of data in bits that is transmitted over the channel per unit time as shown in Eq. (1).…”

“…SCTP was originally designed to transmit voice packages over the Internet. It offers a number of features that are not offered by TCP and UDP, such as multi-streaming and multihoming [24][25][26][27].…”

“…This paper, however, uses Uppaal, a model checking tool, to formally model and verify the basic handshake mechanisms employed by TCP and SCTP. Previous analysis of the protocol concentrated on its performance aspects [5] and used network simulator NS-2. Different types of potential attacks were discussed in [2], and the authors undertook a manual review of three implementations to look for vulnerabilities.…”
