Performance Analysis of Satellite-to-Ground Coherent Optical Communication System with Aperture Averaging

Abstract: The satellite-to-ground optical communication system suffers from atmosphere turbulence severely. It is well-known that the coherent detection can increase the receiver sensitivity and performing aperture averaging can reduce the scintillation caused by the atmosphere turbulence. In this paper, the bit error rate, the outage probability and the average capacity of a coherent satellite-to-ground optical communication downlink with aperture averaging are analyzed. The Log-normal atmosphere turbulence model and B… Show more

“…To do so, an integration along the propagation path must be performed (equations (A. 19) and (A.20)). Here we introduce the considerations of the previous paragraph, imposing that the parameters measuring the strength of the atmospheric effects are constant (greater than 0) inside the atmosphere and 0 outside.…”

“…Optical satellite-based links have the important drawback of being strongly dependent on the weather conditions [17][18][19][20]. The presence of turbulent eddies and scattering particles like haze or fog generates random fluctuations of the relative permittivity of the air, on different length-and time-scales.…”

“…A promising future practical application of outdoor FSOs, namely, space optical communications, is the topic of the next two papers. Li and co-researchers [8] have analyzed the technique of aperture averaging with a goal to partially correct the adverse effects of atmospheric turbulence in a coherent LEO satellite-to-ground binary phase shift keying system. The authors collected data on the channel gain with the increasing aperture sizes, confirming that the performance is initially improved.…”

“…In 2014, Bell laboratories reported a multi-carrier transmission system with the single-channel rate of 1 Tbps again; the code-type of the system was 16QAM; the transmission distance was 480 km; and the spectral efficiency of the spectral efficiency of the system was 5 bps/Hz [9]. Compared with optical communications with direct-detection, coherent optical communications [10][11][12][13][14][15] have the advantages of high receiving sensitivity and anti-polarization dispersion. In addition, the coherent detection can support M-ary modulation format and effectively utilize the bandwidth of the spectrum.…”
