Performance analysis of beamspace MUSIC with beamforming angle

Abstract: The relation between beamforming and related beamspace high resolution direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation is studied in this paper. Good DOA estimates are obtainable by applying MUSIC to the beam outputs directly. DOA estimation performance is related to the beamforming angle and inter-beam angle. This paper uses the forward-backward spatial smoothing technique as the preprocessor of beamspace MUSIC. We show by computer simulation that DOA estimates vary with inter-beam angle. We also show that DOA estimate… Show more

“…In addition, when using a small number of antenna elements, proper DOA estimation performance is not guaranteed with the ESPRIT method. Moreover, we compared the performance of the beamspace MUSIC algorithm [25] with that of our proposed method. We needed to find the approximate DOA of the target in the beamspace MUSIC method, which was an unnecessary process in our proposed method.…”

“…To cover the entire array element dimension, multiple beamspace transformation matrices may be considered. Algorithms based on beamspace processing, such as Beamspace MUSIC [38], Beamspace root MUSIC [39], and Beamspace ESPRIT [40], have several benefits, including reduced computational complexity, improved resolution, and reduced estimation error [3,[5][6][7]27,41]. The estimation performance of the Beamspace MUSIC algorithms can approach the Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB) if appropriate preprocessor settings are used [42].…”

“…There have been several effective AA-BF algorithms, e.g., direction-of-arrival (DOA) based beamforming [9] and eigenbeamforming [10], for the AP to get the directional beams based on the estimated omni-directional CSI. Eigenbeamforming takes full advantage of the spatial correlations by transmitting over the strongest beam to a given user which can increase system capacity and reduce the interference from others, and we take it as the AA-BF algorithm in this paper.…”
