Performance analysis of batching decisions in waveless order release environments for e‐commerce stock‐to‐picker order fulfillment

Abstract: Warehouse automation is increasingly adopted to manage throughput fluctuations in e‐commerce order fulfillment. This work develops queuing network models and solution methodologies for performance analysis of a stock‐to‐picker system that connects an upstream automated storage system to a downstream pick station. We focus on the pick station process, quantifying the throughput differences between a pick station that employs a static versus dynamic batching strategy. We consider a waveless order release environ… Show more

“…This implied that there was a positive correlation between waveless picking and the supply chain performance of food and beverage processing firms in Kenya. These findings mirror those of Bansal et al, (2021) who established the existence of a positive correlations between waveless picking and performance of the supply chain.…”

“…Waveless picking and supply chain performance have a positive relationship (R = .625, R 2 = .390) and F (1,89) = 56.975, p = .000, according to the findings in the table below (table 4). The findings are similar to those of Bansal et al, (2021) who established a positive linear relationship between waveless picking and performance of the supply chain. The independent variables can explain the variations in the dependent variable using the R 2 .…”

“…Our paper is also related to the issue of order fulfillment decisions. A group of papers discussed the influences of different order fulfillment policies on online retailers' shipping costs in a single channel (Xu et al, 2009;Acimovic and Graves, 2014;Jasin and Sinha, 2015;Li et al, 2017;Lei et al 2018;Ishfaq and Raja, 2018;Ishfaq and Bajwa, 2019;Jiang and Li, 2020;Bansal et al, 2021;DeValve et al, 2022;Lei et al, 2022). Acimovic and Graves (2014) used industry data to examine an online retailer's order fulfillment policy, and the results showed that the proposed fulfillment policy could reduce a firm's shipping cost for single-item orders.…”
