Perforation in gastric malignancy

Abstract: Perforation in gatric malignancy is a rare condition, occurring in only 20 patients at the New York Hospital‐Cornell Medical Center between 1932 and 1969. Two patients are reported in whom plication followed by gastrectomy produced a satisfactory result. Early diagnosis of gastric cancer can be achieved by gastrointestinal x‐rays, allowing for appropriate therapy prior to perforation. If perforation does occur, the edge of the perforation should be biopsied and diagnostic analysis carried out. If feasible, pri… Show more

“…Perforation of gastric cancer accounts for less than 1% of the incidence of acute abdomen [1] and few reports of the condition have appeared in the English-language literature in the past 20 years [2,3]. Since perforated gastric cancer is clinically characterized by generalized peritonitis and an advanced stage of the disease, it usually results in a poor outcome, and long-term survival is rare.…”

“…In 1972. Cortese et al [4] published a series of reports in which perforation occcurred in 20 of 2,181 gastric malignancies (0.9%). According to some Japanese researches, the incidence of perforation origi nating from cancer of the stomach varied from 0.13 to 2.9% with an average of 0.61 % [5][6][7][8], thus being slightly lower than the one reported in the English literature, which is between 0.9 and 6.0% [3,4,9], This higher per centage is due to the high incidence of well differentiated adenocarcinomas in the United States.…”
