Perfluorooctanesulfonate and other fluorochemicals in the serum of American Red Cross adult blood donors.

Abstract: Perfluorooctanesulfonyl fluoride-based products have included surfactants, paper and packaging treatments, and surface protectants (e.g., for carpet, upholstery, textile). Depending on the specific functional derivatization or degree of polymerization, such products may degrade or metabolize, to an undetermined degree, to perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), a stable and persistent end product that has the potential to bioaccumulate. In this investigation, a total of 645 adult donor serum samples from six American… Show more

“…Concentrations of PFOS were less than 100 ng/mL in blood serum of 95% of the U.S. population (23). In the present study, serum PFOS concentrations were less than 100 ng/ mL in 85% of the Chinese population.…”

“…Similarly, no gender-related differences in the concentrations of PFOS or PFOA were reported in a study of PFOS concentrations in human blood in the United States. (23). It is conceivable that the differences in PFC concentrations between the sexes observed in the present study may be attributable to confounding factors, e.g., occupation and lifestyle of the donors, not considered in this study.…”

“…Ultra-pure water was prepared by Milli-Q system (Millipore, Milford, MA, USA). Ammonium acetate [CH 3 COONH 4 ] and acetic acid (CH 3 COOH) were of analytical reagent grade. The C18 SPE cartridge (500 mg, 6 mL) was bought from Alltech (Deerfield, IL, USA).…”

“…PFOS is also used as a surfactant in firefighting foams [2]. It spreads widely in the environment, wildlife, and humans [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. Subchronic exposure to PFOS may lead to significant weight loss accompanied by hepatotoxicity and reductions of serum cholesterol and thyroid hormones.…”
