“…Independent of consumption group, women had lower PFOS and PFHxS concentrations than men, which is consistent with previous studies (Fromme et al, 2009). The effect of gender is probably a consequence of the enhanced elimination of PFASs via pregnancy, lactation, and menstruation Brantsaeter et al, 2013;Denys et al, 2014;Harada and Koizumi, 2009;Lorber et al, 2015;Salihovic et al, 2015;Wong et al, 2014). The lack of significant increasing trend across female consumption groups may be due to our small sample size combined with large individual variation.…”

“…Unlike the other PFAS we present, PFHxA is more bound to blood cells and whole blood would therefore be a more suitable blood matrix to determine PFHxA (Poothong et al 2017). Several other studies also failed to detect PFHxA in serum/plasma (Christensen et al 2016;Eriksson et al 2017;Salihovic et al 2015). Russell et al (2013) reported an apparent elimination half-life of PFHxA in whole blood from seven ski wax technicians as 32 d with a range of 14-49 d. Due to the fact that PFHxA was measured in serum in the present study, which did not adequately reflect the real body burden level, our estimation of the half-life is, therefore, unreliable.…”

“…Biomonitoring data provides a critical tool for evaluating the effectiveness of the voluntary and regulatory initiatives, and most studies report decreasing PFAS concentrations in human serum after the year 2000, with significant declines of PFOS and PFOA (Reviewed in Land et al 2018 ). However, trends for the longer chained PFASs like perfluoronanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), and perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA) have been inconsistent across populations (Calafat et al 2007 ; Glynn et al 2012 ; Jain 2018 ; Kato et al 2011 ; Liu et al 2015 ; Olsen et al 2017 ; Salihovic et al 2015 ; Schroter-Kermani et al 2012 ). Furthermore, in cross-sectional studies assessing human exposure to PFASs, concentrations have frequently been reported to be positively associated with age and to birth cohorts (Haug et al 2009 ).…”
