Objective: To Identify Quilombola women’s social representations about health care and to characterize practices performed by them. Method: a descriptive, qualitative study, applying the Social Representations Theory, conducted with 30 women from a Quilombola community in the Brazilian Amazon. Individual interviews and thematic content analysis were carried out. Results: Health care practices are related to the home, people, families, and environment, indicating a Quilombola women’s extended understanding about health care. In the first instance, natural resources derived from traditional knowledge and use of herbs are applied, in the second instance, the official health system, with the mother-woman being the main caregiver of the family. Final Considerations: the mother enables a health care in the family daily life, and she is the main way of access health professionals have to enter the Quilombola community and provide proper care from the official health system to the group.

Fatores associados ao desenvolvimento de hipertensão arterial em uma comunidade quilombola

Objetivo: avaliar os fatores associados ao desenvolvimento da Hipertensão Arterial (HA) em indivíduos residentes de uma comunidade quilombola. Método: estudo transversal, realizado com 74 participantes. Os dados foram coletados por meio do preenchimento de dois formulários, sendo eles: sociodemográfico/socioeconômico e sobre estilo de vida. Realizou-se análise estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados: predominou o sexo feminino, raça preta, casados, ensino fundamental incompleto e a classe econômica C2. 37,8% autorreferiu presença da HA, destes, 22,9% eram mulheres e 14,9%, homens. Obteve-se maiores percentuais de não obesos, não tabagistas, não alcoólatras e praticantes de algum tipo de atividade física. Quanto aos hábitos alimentares, observou-se o consumo de frutas, legumes, hortaliças, temperos industrializados, alimentos ultraprocessados e processados. Quanto as recomendações sobre alimentação saudável, 64,9% afirmaram nunca ter recebido orientações e 48,6% não procura o serviço de saúde.

The elderly from Quilombola communities are groups socially vulnerable with specific needs. Quilombola communities are territories made up of descendants of escaped slaves, located in remote rural areas. This study aims to describe the socioeconomic, sanitary, and demographic characteristics of the living conditions of the elderly. A household survey was conducted with 208 older persons from 11 Quilombola communities in the Maranhão, Northeast, Brazil. Among the 208 elderly people interviewed, 54.3% were women, 48.6% were between 60 and 69 years old, 59.1% declared themselves black, 35.6% were married, and 54.3% did not know how to read and write. About 81% of the elderly are in the worst income stratum. Among 59.6% of households, the water supply comes from a well/spring on the property itself, and garbage was burned/buried in 89.4% of the houses. In overall, housing construction, 64.4% of the elderly had appropriate materials used on the walls, 89.9% in the construction of the roof, and only 30.7% in the construction of the floor. The majority of the elderly did not have adequate construction of ceiling, floor, and walls according to sex and age. It was observed that the elderly live in a situation of vulnerability and precarious living conditions.
