Despite significant progress, there is still a gender gap in science all over the world, especially at senior levels. Some progressive countries are recognizing the need to address barriers to gender equality in order to retain their best scientists and innovators, and ensure research excellence and social and economic returns on the investment made by taxpayers each year on training women scientists. We investigated the gender distribution of: (i) the productivity scholarship (PS) holders of the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico, CNPq, N= 13,625), (ii) the members of the Brazilian Academy of Science (Academia Brasileira de Ciências, ABC, N= 899), and (iii) the amount of funding awarded for top quality research ("Universal" Call of CNPq, N= 3,836), between the years of 2013 and 2014. Our findings show evidence for gender imbalances in all the studied indicators of Brazilian science. We found that female scientists were more often represented among PS holders at the lower levels of the research ranking system (2). By contrast, male scientists were more often found at higher levels (1A and 1B) of PS holders, indicating the top scientific achievement, both in "Engineering, Exact Sciences, Earth Sciences", and "Life Sciences". This imbalance was not found in Humanities and Social Sciences. Only 14% of the ABC members were women. Humanities and Applied Social Sciences had a relatively low representation of women in the Academy (3.7%) compared to Engineering, Exact and Earth Sciences: 54.9% and Life Sciences: 41.4%. Finally, female scientists obtained significantly more funding at the lower level of the research ranking system (2), whereas male scientists obtained significantly more funding at the higher levels (1A and 1B). Our results show strong evidence of a gender imbalance in Brazilian science. We hope that our findings will be used to stimulate reforms that will result in greater equality in Brazilian science, and elsewhere.

This work has the purpose of mapping the scientific production of researchers recipient of CNPq productivity grants in research (PQ) and productivity grants in technological development and innovative extension (DT), in the Production Engineering field, in the four-year period from 2013 to 2016. The information was extracted from the Lattes Platform, on which we obtained quantitative data about the individual scientific production of 190 researchers, through the software scripLattes v8.10. The data analysis was conducted through descriptive statistics, the Kolgomorov-Smirnov data normality test, the Kruskal-Wallis test, and the Mann-Whitney test. The results show that 76% of the researchers compose the PQ grant category. Within the four-year period, among PQ researchers, 1B and 1A researchers had the best average of total published articles, with 19.42 and 15.75 articles per researcher, respectively. Among DT researchers, 1D and level 2 researchers had, in average, 21.5 and 12.57 published articles, respectively. PQ researchers maintain their production of scientific articles homogeneous at all Qualis levels. On the other hand, DT researchers present greater heterogeneity in their publications. It is possible to conclude that level 1 researchers do not focus on journals that present low Qualis ratings for the publication of their research. In contrast, level 2 researchers are less experienced and expect to publish in higher-level journals, but when their works are rejected, they start “betting” on journals of lesser quality.

Introdução: investimentos em pesquisas científicas influenciam diretamente a produção científica brasileira. Estudos visam caracterizar os pesquisadores beneficiados por esse auxílio. Objetivo: descrever o perfil dos pesquisadores fonoaudiólogos bolsistas de produtividade científica no Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico. Método: realizou-se busca simples na Plataforma Lattes, na base doutores brasileiros, utilizando os filtros: bolsistas de produtividade e formação profissional. Foram excluídos fonoaudiólogos com bolsas suspensas. Utilizou-se o Programa Bioestat 5.3 para a análise descritiva. Resultados: dos 58 pesquisadores, 65,5% estão no nível 2, sexo feminino (98,5%) e com tempo de formação entre 30 e 40 anos (32,8%). 60,3% possuem pós-doutorado, sendo 65,7% realizados no Brasil. 48,5% são vinculados a instituições públicas estaduais com atuação na Audiologia (36,2%) e 74,1% estão registrados no Crefono 2ª região. 83,33% são do nível 2 e possuem menos de 20 anos de formação. As orientações prevalentes foram: pós-graduação no nível 1A, mestrado nível 1B e iniciação científica nos demais níveis. A publicação de livros foi mais frequente, com destaque para os níveis 1C-1D, trabalhos/resumos em anais e artigos mais predominantes em 1A-1B. O número de citações na Scopus foi a mais prevalente. Conclusão: prevalência de bolsistas nível 2, sexo feminino, pós-doutores com obtenção de titulação no Brasil, tempo de formação acima dos 30 anos e menos de 20 anos de conclusão do doutorado. As universidades públicas concentram maior número de bolsistas e na área de Audiologia. Há mais contribuições científicas em livros, orientações de iniciação científica e citações na base de dados Scopus.
