To understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected caregivers, we assessed its perceived impact on caregiving through a new measure: the Caregiver COVID-19 Limitations Scale (CCLS-9), in Spanish and English. We also compared levels of caregiver self-efficacy and burden pre-COVID-19 and early in the pandemic. We administered surveys via internet to a convenience sample of caregivers in January 2020 (pre-pandemic, n = 221) and in April–June 2020 (English, n = 177 and Spanish samples, n = 144) to assess caregiver self-efficacy, depression, pain, and stress. We used the early pandemic surveys to explore the validity of the CCLS-9. The pre-COVID-19 survey and the April English surveys were compared to determine how the COVID-19 pandemic affected caregivers. The CCLS-9 had strong construct and divergent validity in both languages. Compared to pre-COVID-19, caregiver stress ( p = .002) and pain ( p = .009) were significantly greater early in COVID-19, providing evidence of its validity. COVID-19 added to caregiver stress and pain.

Introducción: Las medidas de mitigación por COVID-19 incrementaron la necesidad de cuidado informal en los adultos mayores; caracterizar a los cuidadores permitirá desarrollar estrategias que apoyen a los proveedores de cuidado durante la contingencia. Objetivo: Describir las características sociodemográficas y de salud de los cuidadores informales de adultos mayores, aspectos sobre el cuidado y acceso a la tecnología durante la pandemia por COVID-19. Metodología: Estudio descriptivo transversal, en 52 cuidadores informales identificados mediante un muestreo por bola de nieve. Se incluyeron cuidadores mayores de 18 años no remunerados. Los datos se recolectaron en línea, mediante una cédula de datos elaborada exprofeso. Se calcularon frecuencias, porcentajes y medidas de tendencia central. Resultados: El 67% eran mujeres, casadas (36%), católicas (73.1%), con un promedio de 37 años de edad y 13 años de escolaridad. El 36% se dedicaba al hogar y 21.2% eran estudiantes. El 73% no padecían enfermedades crónicas y dormían 7 horas diarias, dedicando 9.4 horas diarias al cuidado de las personas. Predominó el cuidado por hijos en 35%, que no vivían con el adulto mayor (54%), compartiendo el cuidado con otras personas en 83%, el 79% no tenían ningún tipo de capacitación y solo un 21.2% recibió capacitación por enfermeras. El 63% recibió información sobre prevención de COVID-19 y 96% tenía internet en su hogar. Conclusiones: El cuidador informal se caracteriza por mujeres con un promedio de 37 años de edad, escolaridad alta y aparentemente sana; las cuales requieren orientación por enfermería para desempeñar el cuidado durante la contingencia.

Depression Associated with Caregiver Quality of Life in Post-COVID-19 Patients in Two Regions of Peru

Due to COVID-19, the workload experienced by caregivers has increased markedly which has led them to experience fatigue, anxiety and depression. This study aims to determine the relationship between quality of life and depression in caregivers of post-COVID-19 patients in two regions of Peru. In a cross-sectional analytical study, the sample was non-probabilistic and by snowball, and consisted of 730 caregivers, to whom the questionnaires “Modified Betty Ferell Quality of Life” and the “Beck Depression Inventory” were applied. It was determined that being a male caregiver (OR: 2.119; 95% CI: 1.332–3.369) was associated with a good quality of life. On the other hand, caregivers who had children (OR: 0.391; 95% CI: 0.227–0.675), were vaccinated against COVID-19 (OR: 0.432; 95% CI: 0.250–0.744), were immediate family members (OR: 0.298; 95% CI: 0.117–0.761) and had high depression (OR: 0.189; 95% CI: 0.073–0.490) were associated with poor quality of life. The results of this study allow us to conclude the association between depression and poor quality of life in caregivers of these patients so it is necessary to monitor the mental health of caregivers, and to develop adaptation strategies to pandemic conditions.
