Percutaneous coronary intervention in a patient with single coronary artery

Abstract: Coronary artery anomalies are found in 1-5% of all coronary angiograms. Single coronary artery is a rare congenital anomaly. The prevalence of the anomaly is 0.024-0.066% of the general population and percutaneous coronary intervention in this anomaly is performed infrequently. The highest incidence of this condition is reported from India. We report a case of a 55 year old patient of anterior wall ST elevation myocardial infarction with L1 group of single coronary artery who underwent successful angioplasty a… Show more

“…Kafkas et al reported the first case of acute coronary syndrome with an L1-type coronary artery 8. Nasir et al and Mishra et al also reported primary PCI in patients with an L1 subtype 10,11. However, all of these reported cases featured anterior wall STEMI with left anterior descending occlusions.…”

“…Twenty-six cases of congenital absence of the RCA have been reported in 24 articles in the last decade ( Table 1 ). 8 31 The mean age of patients at the time of diagnosis of congenital absence of the RCA was 53 years. Of the 26 reported cases, 14 patients were women, and 5 of them presented with acute myocardial infarction.…”

“… 19 Of the 26 cases of congenital absence of the RCA, 5 presented with acute myocardial infarction. 11 , 15 , 17 , 19 , 30 Patients with a diagnosis of congenital absence of the RCA and acute myocardial infarction should undergo more aggressive management because these patients have a high risk for cardiovascular adverse events. Our two cases had congenital absence of the RCA and presented with acute myocardial infarction.…”

“…In addition, prolonged dilation of coronary balloons may cause of development of malignant arrhythmias. Stent thrombosis can lead to fatal consequences for patients in short and long term follow up [12]. Finally, drug eluting stents must be chosen because of that the use of drug eluting stents versus bare metal stents are associated with significant reductions in major adverse cardiovascular events, all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, target-lesion revascularization, and target-vessel revascularization in patients with chronic kidney disease [14].…”
